Laser Open Set/Oct 2006

Sailing, Surfing and Swimming at the Hains & Lewis

Laser Dinghy Open - 30 Sept / 1 Oct 2006

Neyland Yacht Club (NYC) were hosts to this weekends first Hains & Lewis Laser Open. The end of season event was well attended with Laser dinghies from several Pembrokeshire Clubs, a mixed gender fleet and with ages ranging from 14 to 60.  Despite the weekend’s strong shifting winds, Race Officer Paul (Sledge) Harries managed to get 6 of the 8 planned races completed.

On Saturday, the 4 races planned were eventually completed, even though the entire fleet made time for swimming practise before and during the races.

On Sunday the wind was even stronger, but less gusty and shifty.  Overnight leader Steve Rich managed to hang on and win the Standard rig prize, despite some less than perfect starts, and stumbling on the last leg of the last race to youngster Jeremy Tee.  Major Event sponsor Dan Lewis nearly did the same to his rival co-sponsor Simon McGrath, also in the last race.  The Radial fleet was dominated by Christian Smart (PYC), beating his younger PYC protégés Mike Corney, and Chris Owen.  Leading female, Laura Morgan finished the series strongly, but had too much ground to make up from the first day.

Laser Standard: Steve Rich; Jeremy Tee (on count back), Dan Lewis. All from NYC

Laser Radial: Christian Smart, Mike Corney, Chris Owens. All from PYC

Laser 4.7: Dan Pearn, NYC

Youngest Sailor: Hannah Leggett (14) NYC

Special Scuba Diving Prize: Chris Banner, Formerly NYC, now Bridgend Dolphins

In an uncharacteristically long speech, overall veteran winner Steve Rich thanked the sponsors Hains & Lewis (Solicitors), co-sponsors HikingBench.com (who provided plenty of water and wind), all safety crew, all visiting sailors, superb pasta from caterers and everybody else that helped at NYC.  The whole event was a huge success, and long may it continue.
