Sailing, Surfing and Swimming at the Hains & Lewis Laser Dinghy Open - 30 Sept / 1 Oct 2006
Neyland Yacht Club (NYC) were hosts to this weekends first Hains & Lewis Laser Open. The end of season event was well attended with Laser dinghies from several Pembrokeshire Clubs, a mixed gender fleet and with ages ranging from 14 to 60. Despite the weekend’s strong shifting winds, Race Officer Paul (Sledge) Harries managed to get 6 of the 8 planned races completed.
On Saturday, the 4 races planned were eventually completed, even though the entire fleet made time for swimming practise before and during the races.
On Sunday the wind was even stronger, but less gusty and shifty. Overnight leader Steve Rich managed to hang on and win the Standard rig prize, despite some less than perfect starts, and stumbling on the last leg of the last race to youngster Jeremy Tee. Major Event sponsor Dan Lewis nearly did the same to his rival co-sponsor Simon McGrath, also in the last race. The Radial fleet was dominated by Christian Smart (PYC), beating his younger PYC protégés Mike Corney, and Chris Owen. Leading female, Laura Morgan finished the series strongly, but had too much ground to make up from the first day.
Laser Standard: Steve Rich; Jeremy Tee (on count back), Dan Lewis. All from NYC Laser Radial: Christian Smart, Mike Corney, Chris Owens. All from PYC Laser 4.7: Dan Pearn, NYC Youngest Sailor: Hannah Leggett (14) NYC Special Scuba Diving Prize: Chris Banner, Formerly NYC, now Bridgend Dolphins
The first dinghy open of the season took place on Sunday 21st May. The weather started off bad and got worse, however 18 brave crews took to the water for the first race in a blustery easterly wind with nice "cooling" showers! Div 1 & 2 set off on one of "Sledge's" famous triangles with a dog leg course, whilst Div 3 had a more orthodox triangle. After two laps the weather appeared to be getting worse and everyone was glad to see the shortened course flag. Whilst ashore eveyone took advantage of the food and drink provided by the excellent shore party team. Sledge had set another one of his memory courses for the second race which was basically an "M" course. This gave everyone ashore a good view of the mark roundings close to the Club. Once again everyone made the effort to start but as the wind increased more retirements took place with breakages, capsizes and general tiredness. The third race took place with Division 3 seeing sense by staying ashore. The six finishers from Division 2 gave everyone on shore an insight to great boat control, determination and endurance plus very eciting racing. Thanks must also go to the rescue boat crews (Steve Murray, Luke Howells, Liz Jenkins and Steve Brick) for not only laying all the marks several times but also for their prompt attendance at the many capsizes.
